Stunning tilework inside Bahia Palace
We booked this a week ahead of our trip. mobile ticket worked straight away at the gate. The painted ceilings and zellige panels are incredible — we spent about an hour inside and still felt we rushed a bit.
Skip the ticket-office queue at the Saadian Tombs with an instant mobile pass, or visit with a licensed Marrakech guide who can explain what you’re looking at inside the Chamber of the Twelve Columns. Booked, checked and guided by our own team — not resold from a platform.
The Saadian Tombs are the finest small monument in Marrakech: a royal necropolis of carved cedar, gilded honeycomb vaulting and Carrara marble, sealed up for two centuries and rediscovered almost by accident in 1917. They lie in the Kasbah district, on Rue de la Kasbah beside the Kasbah Mosque, a short walk from Place des Ferblantiers and El Badi Palace, inside the Medina of Marrakesh — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Below you’ll find the current 2026 opening hours, what a ticket actually costs at the gate and from us, what there is to see, how to get there, and — most importantly — how to handle the queue, because the Saadian Tombs are small and the wait is the single thing that makes or breaks a visit.
We are a Local Agency in Marrakech, Every fact on this page is checked in person by our own guides — including the opening hours, which change during Ramadan and religious holidays and are frequently wrong on the large booking platforms.
Last checked: 15 July 2026 by Ahmed, Local Guide, licensed guide in Marrakech since 2008
The site is small and access to the main mausoleum is single-file, so the time of day matters more here than at any other monument in Marrakech. Arrive at 09:00 opening or in the last hour before 17:00; avoid 11:00 to 14:00, when the queue for the Chamber of the Twelve Columns can run 30–45 minutes.
Ramadan and Eid hours are set locally and can shift by a day or two depending on the lunar calendar. If you’re visiting during either, and we’ll confirm the hours for your date.
Yes — with one honest warning: it’s small, and the queue is the whole game.
Unlike Bahia or El Badi, this isn’t a sprawling site you wander for an hour. The Saadian Tombs are a compact walled garden with two mausoleum buildings and around a hundred graves. The star — the Chamber of the Twelve Columns, where the sultan Ahmad al-Mansur is buried — is viewed from a doorway, not entered, and only a few people fit at once. That’s why the line forms. Visitors who arrive at midday can spend more time queueing than looking.
But the craftsmanship is genuinely world-class, and in a city of grand-but-empty monuments, this is the one that still takes your breath away up close. The Chamber of the Twelve Columns is carved cedar, stucco muqarnas and Italian Carrara marble, with twelve columns around three royal tombs — widely considered the finest single room the Saadian dynasty ever built. The garden around it, with its smaller graves of princes and household members, is quiet and beautiful in a way the bigger sites aren’t.
Time it right and the Saadian Tombs are a highlight. Time it wrong and they’re a queue with a nice view at the end. The difference is entirely about when you go — which is exactly what this page is here to help with.
How long do you need? Thirty to forty-five minutes of actual looking. Add your queue time on top, which is why the hour you arrive matters so much.
The Saadian Tombs sit on Rue de la Kasbah, beside the Kasbah Mosque, in the Kasbah district of the medina. The entrance is a narrow passage next to the mosque — easy to walk past, so the mosque’s minaret is the landmark to aim for.
About 14 minutes (1.0 km). Head south through the medina toward the Kasbah; the entrance passage is beside the Kasbah Mosque. The route is flat but the final approach is a narrow lane, so watch for the mosque.
A short walk — the two sites are neighbours in the Kasbah, and pairing them is the most popular half-day in this part of the medina. [confirm exact distance/time]
On foot from Place des Ferblantiers (Tinsmiths Square)
About 9 minutes (650 m) via Rte Dar Daou. A straightforward, mostly flat walk through the Kasbah.
About 13 minutes (1.0 km) via Rte Dar Daou. Bahia, El Badi and the Saadian Tombs together make a comfortable half day on foot.
By tuk tuk
We collect you from your riad door and drop you as close to the entrance as the lanes allow (+€20 per group). The Kasbah’s streets are confusing and cars can’t reach the entrance, so this is the easiest option, especially in the midday heat.
Arriving from outside the medina
If you’re staying in Guéliz, Hivernage or the Palmeraie, take a taxi to the Kasbah / Bab Agnaou and walk the last stretch to the Kasbah Mosque.
Go at 09:00 opening. If you can’t, go in the last hour before 17:00.
This matters more here than anywhere else in Marrakech. The main chamber is viewed single-file from a doorway, so between 11:00 and 14:00 the queue can swallow 30–45 minutes of your visit. First thing in the morning you can walk almost straight in; late afternoon thins out again as the coach groups leave. Weekdays are quieter than weekends, and spring and autumn are peak season, so booking your date ahead is worth it.
For photographers: morning light falls best into the garden and through the doorway of the Chamber of the Twelve Columns. Arrive at opening and photograph before the first queue forms.
The Saadian Tombs are the royal necropolis of the Saadian dynasty, which ruled Morocco from Marrakech in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The site was developed above all by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur — the same sultan who built El Badi Palace from Saharan gold — who transformed it into a mausoleum worthy of his dynasty and was himself buried in the Chamber of the Twelve Columns when he died in 1603.
Around 1696 the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismail set about erasing the Saadians who came before him, dismantling their great palace at El Badi. But he stopped short of destroying this cemetery. Instead he had it walled up and sealed, leaving it accessible only through the adjoining Kasbah Mosque. It remained hidden and largely forgotten for over two centuries.
In 1917, during the French protectorate, the necropolis was rediscovered — reportedly spotted from the air — and a discreet passage was opened so it could be restored and visited. That long silence is why the carving survived so well, and why the Saadian Tombs feel less like a monument and more like something found.

This is the least step-free of the Kasbah monuments, and it’s honest to say so.
The entrance is a long, narrow passage, and the main mausoleum is viewed from a raised threshold with a step. The garden paths are uneven and there are tight, single-file sections near the Chamber of the Twelve Columns. For wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility, the narrow entrance and the crowding at the main chamber are the real obstacles.
If mobility is a concern, message us on WhatsApp before booking. A tuk tuk gets you as close as the lanes allow, we can advise on the quietest time to avoid the crush, and we’ll tell you honestly which parts will and won’t work for you.
Monument passes bundle several sights at up to 15% off — with a private tuk tuk between every one.

Yes. The ticket office sells tickets on the day for the same price. The trade-off is cash in dirhams and two separate queues — one to buy, one for the main chamber. Booking ahead removes the first.
Yes — the Chamber of the Twelve Columns is arguably the finest single room in Marrakech, carved cedar and Carrara marble around three royal tombs. The one caveat is size: it's a small site, and the midday queue can be long. Go early and it's a highlight.
Because the main chamber is small and viewed single-file from a doorway, only a few people fit at once. Between 11:00 and 14:00 the wait can reach 30–45 minutes. Arriving at 09:00 opening or after 15:00 is the way around it.
Thirty to forty-five minutes of looking, plus however long you queue for the main chamber — which is exactly why the hour you arrive matters.
The Chamber of the Twelve Columns with the tomb of Ahmad al-Mansur, the quieter Hall of Three Niches, a prayer hall, and a garden holding around a hundred graves of the royal household.
Easily — they're neighbours in the Kasbah, a short walk apart. You can add El Badi to your booking for €12 per person, and Bahia Palace is about 13 minutes away if you want all three in a half day.
Not strictly. The site is small enough to walk alone. But a guide explains the muqarnas, the marble, and the extraordinary story of the sealed necropolis — and turns a five-minute look into something you remember. That's our honest view.
Yes. We collect you by tuk tuk from your riad door and drop you as close to the entrance as the Kasbah lanes allow, for €20 per group.
Yes. When the tombs were sealed in the 1690s, the only access left was through the adjoining Kasbah Mosque. After the 1917 rediscovery, a separate visitor passage was opened — the narrow corridor you enter through today.
Yes, but on reduced hours — roughly 09:00 to 15:00. Exact times are set locally and can shift with the lunar calendar, so message us to confirm for your date.
